Iowa EC-PBIS Modules
Early Childhood Positive Behavior Intervention and (EC-PBIS) Self-Study Modules are now available for Child Care Center Providers & Preschool Teachers at no cost! Enrollment requests from other early childhood community partners may also be approved for the series.

Five Preventative Classroom Practices for Early Childhood Self-Study Class
This training focuses on how to incorporate classroom practices to reduce challenging behavior in early childhood classrooms. It will introduce strategies for classroom staff to develop sound, universal practices for engagement and trauma-informed prevention, instruction, and reinforcement based on Prevent, Teach, Reinforce for Young Children (second edition) by Dunlap, Wilson, Strain, and Lee.
Topics will include: Behavior Basics, 5:1 Ratio of Positive Attention, Using Predictable Schedules, Establishing Routines Within Routines, Directly Teach Behavioral Expectations, and Directly Teach Peer Related Social Skills.

Overview of Practice-Based Coaching
(required for EC-PBIS Coaches)
This series introduces the participant to Practice-Based Coaching (PBC). PBC is an evidence-based coaching approach that supports the implementation of effective practices. Participants will gain knowledge of the key components of PBC as well as coaching strategies and tools to be used when coaching early childhood professionals. This training is intended for those in roles that support adult caregivers/teachers of young children.
NOTE: Participants must be working with or for a program or school which is participating in Program-Wide EC-PBIS of Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) in order to attend this training.

TPOT – Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool for Preschool Classrooms
The Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool (TPOT) for Preschool Classrooms is an instrument designed to measure practitioners’ implementation of teaching and behavior support practices associated with the Pyramid Model for Promoting Social Emotional Competence in Infants and Young Children. This training will prepare coaches to use the TPOT tool with fidelity while observing teachers. Participants are required to pass a reliability test before receiving their certificate.
NOTE: Participants must meet the following pre-requisites in order to attend this training
- Participants must have attended the Preschool EC-PBIS Module Series
- Participants Must be working with or for a program that is implementing program-wide EC-PBIS (please contact your PD organization if you have questions)

TPITOS – Teaching Pyramid Infant/Toddler Observation Scale
The Teaching Pyramid Infant-Toddler Observation Scale (TPITOS) for Infant-Toddler Classrooms is an assessment instrument designed to measure the fidelity of implementation of practices associated with the Pyramid Model in center-based infant and toddler care settings. This training will prepare coaches to use the TPITOS tool with fidelity while observing teachers. Participants are required to pass a reliability test before receiving their certificate.
NOTE: Participants must meet the following pre-requisites in order to attend this training
- Participants must have attended the Infant/Toddler EC-PBIS Module Series
- Participants Must be working with or for a program that is implementing program-wide EC-PBIS (please contact your PD organization if you have questions)

Practice-Based Coaching Community of Practice
(highly recommended for EC-PBIS Coaches in their second year)
- Description: Participants will work with a national expert and collaborate with other Iowa coaches to learn and refine Practice-Based Coaching components and strategies. Participants will receive a copy of The Essentials of Practice-Based Coaching if they do not already have one.

- You must have taken the corresponding Module Series training before enrolling in a Train the Trainer.
- You are required to be an approved trainer with a training organization/entity. This prerequisite is required because participants can only receive licensure and IQ4K training credit if they are trained by a trainer approved by an organization/entity to train.

Adult Learning Practices for EC-PBIS
Description: This 3 hour course will introduce participants to the 6 adult learning principles from Jim Knowles and provide practice and information on how to incorporate them into the EC-PBIS modules.
NOTE: All EC-PBIS Module trainers will be expected to complete a 3-hour Adult Learning Practices course. This course will be incorporated into all the Train the Trainers starting in 2025-26 that new trainers attend. Below are stand-alone offerings for 2026-27 of the Adult Learning Practices for EC-PBIS course that are open to current trainers who have already attended a Train the Trainer course for at least 1 EC-PBIS Module strand. Attending this course will meet the requirement for attending a “booster” session to stay a current and active trainer.

Play and The Pyramid Model, Perfect Together with Lindsay Pearson and Ellen Samitt
Play is a powerful process through which children come to understand the world around them. Through play, children gain a sense of safety, agency, and control over their world. Play supports responsive relationships between adults and children and provides children a safe space for acquiring and practicing social-emotional skills. When adults immerse themselves in children’s play, they deepen their understanding of the children and are better able to provide individualized scaffolding for social skill building. This playful and interactive session is perfect for anyone who wants to identify strategies for implementing Pyramid Model practices through play.

What’s Co-Regulation got to Do with It when responding to Challenging Behaviors with Kellie-Ann Brown Campbell
Adults play an important role in the development of self-regulation through adult-child co-regulation interactions. In this session, early childhood practitioners will be introduced to the topic of co-regulation and its important contribution to the development of self-regulation in young children. Practitioners will be exposed to practical, evidence-based and culturally relevant Pyramid Model strategies that may be utilized by practitioners in their daily interactions with young children. Practitioners will leave this session with a better appreciation for their role in the development of young children’s self-regulation skills.

Understanding the Escalation Cycle – Strategies for Prevention and Support with Anna Winneker
Challenging behaviors in young children often follow a predictable pattern called the escalation cycle. In this session, participants will learn to recognize the stages of escalation, identify early warning signs, and use proactive strategies to prevent behaviors from worsening. We will explore practical tools for de-escalation and discuss how to create a supportive environment that emphasizes emotional regulation and relationship-building.
